Reality in 200(ish) Words

Reality is something that can have different meanings to different people.  To me, for example, reality is something I can feel or smell or see.  It is something tangible and nobody can question its existence.  With regards to reality other things come into play, such as alternate realities.  Some people live their lives in these alternate realities, such as video games (Ex. World of Warcraft or Second Life).  To someone who is not involved in these games we can’t understand how they can be viewed as a reality to others.  To the people who play the game, however, they create an entirely different persona that they live through.  They are viewed by others in the way that maybe they wish they were in real life.  This creates the idea that reality isn’t necessarily something pertaining to a person’s senses, but instead how things make them feel.  Those video games bring pleasure to the people who play them.  That feeling is real, so at the end of the day that game has real world implications in their life.  This causes one to be forced to acknowledge that although the game isn’t real life, it is still a reality to the one playing.
So, to sum things up, reality is what gives a person a sense of belonging, or happiness.  It doesn’t matter what the cause is, because if the feelings are real, then whatever caused them is that person’s reality.
